Like a young leaf unfolding on a branch, every product starts at its origin. In the production phase we assess raw material extraction, transport and manufacturing processes. This is when the new leaf takes shape: the start of the lifecycle.
At the end of its life the leaf changes colour and lets go. The same applies to a product: it is dismantled, processed or disposed of. In the end-of-life phase we analyse the environmental impact of demolition, transport, processing and waste treatment.
The leaf grows, captures sunlight and does its job, just like a product being used, maintained and sometimes repaired. In the use phase we map all processes that occur while the product is in service.
The fallen leaf becomes part of the soil and helps nourish new life. The same cycle can apply to materials. In Module D we quantify the potential environmental benefits created through reuse, recovery or recycling.
